about the island

There are two versions regarding the origin of the name of the island, both stem from the language of the Buryats, the indigenous inhabitants of Olkhon. According to the first, the name of the island means "slightly wooded", and the second means "dry". Both words perfectly describe the island. After all, a third of the island is covered with forests and the amount of precipitation is extremely low - about 240 mm per year.

Olkhon Island is the historical and sacred center of Baikal. It is also the oldest center of civilization, famous for its mysterious caves, rock paintings, ancient legends and historical traditions. We highly recommend these tours for everyone who is interested not only in the Baikal nature, but also in the mystical places of the lake. In summer, there are great opportunities for hiking and cycling around the island, and in winter you can walk and drive directly on the ice!

We will pick you up from any place in Irkutsk and start our trip. It takes about 3-4 hours to reach Olkhon Island. There will be some stops on the way where our guide tell you about local traditions, about Olkhon Island and Lake Baikal itself.

17:00 we will visit the spirit place - Cape Burkhan and Shamanka Rock. Walking around the village.

14:00 we will continue our trip and visit lots of places such as Kharantsy, Sandy Bay, a part of Stalin times prison (GULAG), visit the famous rock Three Brothers, the North part of Olkhon Island - cape Khoboy and make a wish at the cape Shunte - Left

We will visit Zamogoy island where we can see Baikal seals if you are lucky, Ogoy island with the Buddhist Stupa of Enlightenment and at the end we will visit the eye spring⛵️ (In case of bad weather, there will be an excursion to the south part of Olkhon island by car: view-point of Khuzhir village, Yalga Cape with the Stones Garden, Khalzany, Cape Kobylya Golova and Trident Rock).
