There are many specific, rare minerals here. In the north, the steppe begins from the Olkhon Gate Strait, in the south it reaches the Anga River. You can see relict spruce forests, light pine forests, sand dunes and steppe expanses, remnant rocks and hilly terrain. Many beautiful bays of Lake Baikal are adjacent to the steppe. The most famous among them is Aya Bay.

There are two versions regarding the origin of the name of the island, both stem from the language of the Buryats, the indigenous inhabitants of Olkhon. According to the first, the name of the island means "a little wooded", and the second means "dry". Both words describe the island perfectly. After all, a third of the island is covered with forests and the amount of precipitation is extremely low – about 240 mm per year.
